The Fickle White Star
Well, my last couple of weeks have been loaded with stress so I had pretty much given up on myself. Fortunately, some wonderful BuddySlim friends refused to give up on me; I got some shopping suggestions and went back to really trying to reduce my carb count… not necessarily eliminating carbs so much as eliminating low-quality carbs. If I am going to have some carbs, it’s going to be as whole grains rather than refined sugar or flour.
I had forgotten how hard low-carb shopping can be, and how much more expensive. It seems like a lot of the low-carb products that were popular at the height of the low-carb craze have mostly disappeared. But still, I think I was able to make some good choices over the weekend, and finally managed to earn my white star back.
I find myself keeping a snack drawer at work to keep from being ravenously hungry by the time I get home at 7pm; it is usually stocked with things like almonds and jerky, although with the stresses of the last week, bags of Starburst jellybeans took over. Ugh! Now I have some South Beach peanut bars in there. But I really need to come up with reasonable snack choices.
The snack drawer is nice…i have one at my work…with almonds, 100 cal snacks, tuna (lol yup), and slim fast.
It seems like sooo many of us are stressed lately. I really hope we all can kick this..
Hope things get better for you!!
Glad to see that these wonderfull buddies kept you going!!
For me, when I am buying carbs - be it bread, granola, cereal, crackers, etc - I won’t buy anything with less than 4 grams of Fiber. A few years ago I saw a dietician for pre-diabetes, what she suggested to me was to have 45 grams of carbs per meal (3 meals) and 15 grams of carb per snack (2 snacks.) When reading the nutrition label she told me any fiber 5 or more can be subtracted from the carbohydrate total to get the net carbs…therefore the higher the fiber content the less empty carbs you are consuming. Fiber one makes some great bars - I noticed we now have generics of those at my store. Hope this is helpful.
Hey Chris , hope all is well with u ,. congrtas on ur white star ! keep us posted on ur eating plan :>)
Snack drawers are good, especially when they have almonds and jerky in them. They are two of my favorite foods. It looks like you are doing well, keep it up!!
I saw you were online. Regarding carbs, think vegetables. Think green vegetables more than anything. I used to follow Atkins and barely made 10 carbs a day, so I know how it is! However, things that are low in carbs but NOT good for you are processed foods, and… men’s favorite comfort food: bacon! STEER CLEAR! Good luck! You’re been away from BuddySlim for a while, but we’re here to help you if you need it.
